The Indian Railways is planning to come up with a freight corridor to link Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh with Kharagpur in West Bengal.
This will be the third freight corridor in the country and the proposed project is expected to get the nod of the Union Finance Ministry during the budget next year.
Once implemented, the corridor will go a long way in the transportation of petroleum products, food grain and other commodities for export purposes from Andhra Pradesh capital region.
It may be recalled that, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, during his 2016-17 budget speech, proposed three freight corridors- East West corridor between Kolkata and Mumbai, North South Corridor between Delhi and Chennai, and East Coast corridor between Kharagpur and Vijayawada.
According to the preliminary engineering-cum-traffic survey of railways, the third corridor will run parallel to the existing alignment and will be designed in such a way that there will be no surface crossing or rail flyovers.
