Four Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) will come up on a 25-acre land in-between Kalingarayan Canal and River Cauvery in the Erode city limits.
These will be set up at a cost of Rs 600 crore. A report in The Hindu stated that there are over 450 small and tiny units involved in printing, bleaching, dyeing and tanning within the city limits using chemicals for various process.
It added that in the absence of treatment plants, most of these units discharge the untreated effluents directly into five canals in their respective areas that finally enter River Cauvery.
Quoting TNPCB officials, it said that during inspection conducted last year, 85 units were found discharging effluents into the canal and power supply was disconnected to those units and were also closed. This year, a total of 40 units were closed.
