Chennai to get second airport on 3,500 acres

Chennai, the capital city of Chennai, is all set to get its second airport. The mega facility will come up on a 3,500 acre site at Mamandur on the outskirts of the metropolis.

The Airport Authority of India has cleared the site and the facility will come up at an investment of Rs 4,500 crore. The first phase, it is expected, would be ready by 2022-23 and it will handle 20 million passengers.

Recently, the Tamil Nadu government issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to appoint a consultant for preparing a draft report and identify three potential sites near the city for the second greenfield airport proposed near Chennai.

As per the RFP issued by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco), the State has four international airports (Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli and Madurai) and two domestic airports (Tuticorin and Salem).
